**** - Exceptional
*** - Very good entertainment
** - Mediocre
* - Just plain bad
NO STARS - Beyond bad
|
- I Am Suzanne (1934)
- I Can't Give You Anything But Love (1940)
- I Could Go On Singing (1963) ** - Judy Garland's concert sequences are the highlights in this soapy backstager.
- I Dood It (1943) ** - Tailor Red Skelton loves movie star Eleanor Powell – the musical numbers outclass the plot by a mile.
- I Dream of Jeanie (1952)
- I Dream Too Much (1935)
- I Like It That Way (1933)
- I Like It That Way (1934)
- I Live For Love (1935)
- I Love a Bandleader (1945)
- I Love Melvin (1953) ** - Donald O'Connor wants to make Debbie Reynolds a magazine cover girl – harmless but uninspired.
- I Married an Angel (1942) ** - Nelson Eddy and Jeannete MacDonald's last film together is a confusing adaptation of the Rodgers & Hart stage hit about a man who actually marries a heavenly angel – only to find her perfection unbearable.
- I Surrender Dear (1948)
- I Wanna Hold Your Hand (1978)
- I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now (1947) ** - Songwriter finds love in the 1890s. Fun period tunes are the only signs of life.
- Ice Capades Revue (1942)
- Ice Follies of 1939 (1939)
- Iceland (1942) ** - This weak Sonja Henie vehicle is fun while she skates.
- I-Don't-Care Girl, The (1953) ** - Mitzi Gaynor stars as vaudeville great Eva Tanguay. Great star, lousy script, good songs -- your call.
- If I Had My Way (1940)
- If I'm Lucky (1946) ** - Harry James and his big band get mixed up with politics. Pretty dull, even with Carmen Miranda on hand.
- If You Knew Susie (1948)
- I'll Be Yours (1947)
- I'll Get By (1950) * - June Haver stars in another tired "songwriter in love" flick.
- I'll See You In My Dreams (1952)
- I'll Take Romance (1937)
- I'll Take Sweden (1965)
- I'll Tell the World (1945)
- I'm No Angel (1933) *** - Mae West as a sideshow hussy. Loads of once-racy fun.
- I'm Nobody's Sweetheart Now (1940)
- In Caliente (1935)
- In Gay Madrid (1930)
- In Old Chicago (1938) *** - Brothers Tyrone Power and Don Ameche yearn for singer Alice Faye while Chicago burns.
- In Person (1935)
- In the Good Old Summertime (1949) *** - Judy Garland and Van Johnson as battling coworkers who don't know they are pen pals. Period songs & handsome production, with
infant Liza Minnelli making her debut in the very final shot.
- In the Navy (1941)
- Incendiary Blonde (1945) *** - Betty Hutton at her best as 1920s celebrity Texas Guinan. Period songs make up for the heavily sanitized story.
- Innocents of Paris (1929) ** - Maurice Chevalier in his American screen debut as a junk man rescuing a child. Corny tale. Highlight -- "Louise."
- Inspector General, The (1949) *** - Danny Kaye hilarious as a phony diplomat.
- International House (1933)
- Interrupted Melody (1955) *** - Eleanor Parker is dubbed but effective in this solid bio of Australian opera diva Marjorie Lawrence.
- Invitation To The Dance (1956) ** - Gene Kelly's tribute to serious dance has moments of magic, but gets bogged down.
- Irene (1940) * - Most of the score is missing in this weak, unrecognizable adaptation of the 1919 stage hit.
- Irish Eyes Are Smiling (1944) ** - Pleasant but mindless tale of Irish-American composer Ernest Ball. The songs are the main attraction.
- Is Everybody Happy? (1929)
- Is Everybody Happy? (1943)
- Isn't It Romantic? (1948)
- It Happened at the World's Fair (1963) NO STARS - And it should have stayed there!
- It Happened in Brooklyn (1947) ** - Frank Sinatra woos and loses Kathryn Grayson as Jimmy Durante cheers him on. Best moment: Durante's "The Song's Gotta Come From the Heart."
- It's a Date (1940) *** - Deanna Durbin competes with her mother for Broadway stardom and a boyfriend. Not Durbin's best, but her fans will enjoy this one.
- It's a Great Feeling (1949)
- It's a Great Life (1930)
- It's Always Fair Weather (1955) *** - Underrated gem! Gene Kelly, Dan Dailey and Michael Kidd as war buddies facing the challenge of peacetime civilian life. Some great numbers, especially an ash can tap sequence.
- It's DeLovely (2004) NO STARS - It's DeGarbage! Grand talents Kevin Kline and Alan Corduner are left to drown in this insult to the legacy of Cole Porter, who's songs are relentlessly crucified. Hollywood must have made this one in hopes that it would bury musical films forever.
- It's Great to Be Alive (1933)
- It's Great To Be Young (1946)
