I strongly endorse all of the books listed here, all of which were consulted to confirm information on Musicals101.com. I have not bothered to include comments on those whose titles make the contents self-evident.

  • Baxter, Joan. Television Musicals: Plots, Critiques, Casts and Credits for 222 Shows, 1944-1996. Jefferson, NC: McFarland & Company, 1997. A magnificent, comprehensive and incredibly detailed catalog of televised musicals.  Although designed as a reference work, it is surprisingly readable.

  • Hanson, Bruce K. The Peter Pan Chronicles: The Nearly 100 Year History of "the Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up." New York: Birch Lane, 1993. In examining the long history of Barrie's Peter Pan, this excellent book gives thorough coverage to various TV musical versions.

  • Inman, David. The TV Encyclopedia. New York: Perigree, 1991.

  • Leonard, William Torbert. Theatre: Stage to Screen to Television. 2 Volumes. Metuchen, NJ: Scarecrow, 1981.

  • Lynch, Richard Chigley. TV and Studio Cast Musicals on Record: Discography of Television Musicals and Studio Recordings of Stage and Film Music. Westport, CT: Greenwood, 1990.

  • McNeil, Alex. Total Television: A Comprehensive Guide to Programming From 1948 to The Present. 3rd Edition. New York: Penguin, 1991. Arguably the most essential reference work on American television.

  • Terrace, Vincent. Complete Encyclopedia of Television: Series, Pilots and Specials, 1937-1973, 3 Volumes. New York: Zoetrope, 1986. Not always easy to find, but extremely useful to researchers.

  • Terrace, Vincent. Television 1970-1980. San Diego: Barnes, 1981.

  • Terrace, Vincent. Television Specials: 3201 Entertainment Spectaculars, 1939-1993. Jefferson, NC: McFarland, 1995.

  • Woolery, George W. Animated TV Specials: The Complete Directory to the First Twenty-five Years, 1962-1987. Metuchen, NJ: Scarecrow, 1989.
